National Mining University (Dnipropetrovsk) in conjunction with Brandenburg Technical University (Cottbus, Germany) and supporting by the German Academic Exchange Service DAAD, organized a series of international educational activities in the format of summer schools for undergraduate graduate students.

In the framework of summer schools, a series of lectures, seminars and workshops, panel discussions was conducted on topical issues of the impact assessment on the environment, strategic environmental assessment and management of spatial planning, integrated planning in the field of environmental protection, sustainable development of regions, environmental management and adaptation to climate change.

The summer schools were attended by fourth- and fifth-year students specializing on “Ecology and Environmental Protection”, “Environmental Economy”, “Management” and “Legal Science”.

From 10 to 21 September 2007 the International Summer School “Environmental assessments: EIA and SEA” was held.

Key issues of the Summer School:

  • Environmental impact assessment (EIA) and strategic environmental assessment (SEA) as potential components of the educational process at NMU;
  • Procedure and legal framework for EIA and SEA in Germany and other European countries;
  • Analysis and forecasting the impact on the environment;
  • Environmental quality standards;
  • Monitoring and assessment of ecosystems;
  • SEA in regional planning;
  • Public participation in the assessment of environmental impacts.

From 18 to 29 May 2009 the International Summer School “Strategic environmental assessment: the potential reduction and adaptation to climate change” was held.

Key issues of the Summer School:

  • Climate change and strategic environmental assessment in terms of territories development;
  • Assessing the impact of climate change;
  • Information databases use for the environmental assessment;
  • Methods for predicting the effects of climatic factors;
  • Measures to mitigate and adapt to climate change;
  • Public Participation in Environmental Assessment.

From 13 to 24 September 2010 the international Summer School “Integrated Environmental Planning for adaptations in terms of global climate change”.

At the end of the workshop, participants received a certificate of international standard, which was equivalent to 3 credits for admission to the Master Course “Environmental and Resource Management” at the Brandenburg Technical University.

During the summer school two excursions were conducted, namely to the Institute of Nature and Environmental Problems of NAS of Ukraine and Dnipropetrovsk city council, as well as meetings in the Ukrainian and German Cultural Center at NMU, where students learned about the peculiarities of German culture and training opportunities in German.
